<p align="justify"Israel sealed a covenant with God in keeping His statutes and commandments (Exodus 19:1-8) so it will bring blessings or curses in the way they handle God’s covenant. So it is important for us not to be too quick to promise or we will regret of the words we spoke.
How many times do we need to be reminded that we need to be careful with our words? Job is a good example for us to follow, which can be found in chapter 27:3-4 NKJV, “As long as my breath is in me, And the breath of God in my nostrils, My lips will not speak wickedness, Nor my tongue utter deceit.” The book of Psalms in chapter 34:12-14 NIV taught us to “Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.”
The Scripture indicate the problem of the words that are spoken with our tongues such as:-
Psalm 35:27-28 NIV, “May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.” My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long.”
Psalm 37:29-31 NASB, “The righteous will inherit the land And dwell in it forever. The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, And his tongue speaks justice. The law of his God is in his heart; His steps do not slip.”
Psalm 64:2-4 NKJV, “Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, Who sharpen their tongue like a sword, And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words, That they may shoot in secret at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.”
Psalm 52:3-5 NKJV, “You love evil more than good, Lying rather than speaking righteousness. Selah You love all devouring words, You deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah”
Proverbs 15:3-5 NIV, “The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. A fool spurns a parent’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.”
Proverbs 16:1-3 NASB, “The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the LORD weighs the motives. Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established.”
Proverbs 17:3-4 NKJV, “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the Lord tests the hearts. An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.”
Jeremiah 9:7-9 NKJV, “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will refine them and try them; For how shall I deal with the daughter of My people? Their tongue is an arrow shot out; It speaks deceit; One speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, But in his heart he lies in wait. Shall I not punish them for these things?” says the Lord. “Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?” ”
Why the need to pray? It is to set our motives that come from our hearts, control our tongues and to commit it to be aligned to God’s way of living. Can we count the number of times we lose control of our tongues? The apostle James doesn’t belittle the smallest organ of our body, where he likens it as a fire and a small rudder of a ship, which is mentioned in
James 3:4-6 NKJV, “Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.”
James 3:7-9 NIV, “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.”
